Pet-Friendly Flooring:
Best Options for Dogs & Cats

By Discount Carpets ยท Hastings & East Sussex ยท 6 min read

Pets and flooring have an uneasy relationship. Claws scratch. Accidents happen. Muddy paws arrive from nowhere. If you're choosing new flooring with a dog or cat in the house, you need to think about scratch resistance, waterproofing and how easy it is to clean โ€” without sacrificing comfort and warmth underfoot.

Here's a straight look at how the main flooring types perform in a pet household.

LVT โ€” The Best All-Round Choice for Pet Owners

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) has become the go-to flooring for pet owners, and it deserves the reputation. A good quality LVT with a 0.55mm wear layer will shrug off dog claws indefinitely. It's 100% waterproof โ€” so accidents, water bowls knocked over and muddy pawprints are all easily dealt with. The surface is warm underfoot (unlike real tile), easy to clean, and available in wood and stone designs that look genuinely convincing.

The only real downside is that LVT can be slippery for dogs on smooth surfaces โ€” particularly large breeds coming in from the garden at speed. A few strategically placed rugs in key areas (hallway, bottom of stairs) solves this easily.

Sheet Vinyl โ€” Budget-Friendly and Practical

Sheet vinyl offers similar benefits to LVT at a lower price point. It's waterproof (a single sheet has no joins for accidents to seep into), easy to clean, and reasonably resistant to scratching. A good quality sheet vinyl in a busy pet household will last 10โ€“12 years. The wear layer is thinner than premium LVT, so very large dogs with long claws may eventually mark the surface.

Carpet โ€” Better Than You Might Expect (With the Right Choice)

Many pet owners assume carpet is a bad idea, but that's not quite right. Carpet is actually warmer and softer underfoot than any hard floor โ€” your dog will almost certainly prefer it โ€” and it provides good grip for older dogs or those with hip problems. The right carpet can work very well with pets.

The key is choosing wisely:

๐Ÿ’ก Enzymatic cleaners are your friend. For pet accidents on carpet, ordinary cleaning products often just mask the smell. An enzymatic cleaner (available from pet shops) breaks down the organic compounds and genuinely removes the odour โ€” which is important because dogs and cats are drawn back to spots they've previously used.

Laminate โ€” Proceed with Caution

Laminate is scratch-resistant but not waterproof. Accidents that aren't cleaned up immediately will seep into the joints and cause swelling and warping. It also tends to be slippery for dogs. Water-resistant laminate (like the Quick-Step Love Aqua Steam) is significantly better, but still not as forgiving as LVT for pet households. If you're set on a wood-effect floor, LVT is a better choice than laminate when pets are involved.

Engineered Wood โ€” Handle with Care

Real wood has a warmth and authenticity that's hard to replicate. Engineered wood is more dimensionally stable than solid wood (it handles humidity changes better) but the wear layer is still genuine wood and will show scratches over time, particularly from large dogs. It can be sanded and refinished to remove scratches, but this adds long-term cost. If you love wood and have large or active dogs, it might be worth considering LVT as a more practical alternative.

Our Verdict for Pet Owners

For most pet owners in Hastings and East Sussex, we'd recommend LVT in hallways, kitchens and living rooms โ€” the areas where accidents and muddy paws are most likely. A good quality twist-pile carpet in polypropylene works well in bedrooms and upstairs rooms where your pets spend quieter time. This combination gives you the practicality where you need it and the warmth and comfort where it matters.
