How Long Does Carpet Last?
Signs It's Time to Replace

By Discount Carpets ยท Hastings & East Sussex ยท 5 min read

A well-chosen, well-maintained carpet can look great for 10โ€“15 years. Some last longer. Others start looking tired after five. The lifespan depends on the quality of the carpet, the amount of foot traffic, whether you have pets or children, and how well it's been cared for. Here's what to expect โ€” and how to know when it's time to move on.

How Long Different Carpets Typically Last

Five Signs Your Carpet Needs Replacing

1. Matting and crushing that won't recover. All carpets flatten under furniture and in high-traffic areas over time. A good carpet will spring back after cleaning. If the pile is permanently crushed, flattened or matted โ€” especially in the middle of rooms and on stairs โ€” it's a sign the fibres are worn out.

2. Stains that won't shift. Even with professional cleaning, some stains become permanent over time โ€” particularly pet stains, bleach marks, or very old spills. Multiple stains that can't be removed affect the look of the whole room and aren't worth tolerating indefinitely.

3. Persistent smell. Older carpets can harbour odours from pets, spills or simply years of everyday life. If professional cleaning hasn't resolved a persistent smell โ€” particularly pet urine smell, which penetrates the underlay and even the subfloor โ€” replacement is often the only real solution.

4. Visible wear, thinning or fraying. If you can see the backing through the pile, if fibres are fraying at the edges, or if the carpet is starting to look noticeably thin in well-used areas, it's past its best. Worn carpet also becomes a trip hazard, particularly on stairs.

5. Allergy or respiratory symptoms worsening. Old carpets accumulate dust mites, pet dander, mould spores and other allergens that even regular vacuuming can't fully address. If someone in your household has allergies or asthma and symptoms have worsened, the carpet could be a contributing factor.

๐Ÿ’ก When in doubt, get a professional clean first. A hot water extraction clean costs a fraction of replacement and can dramatically improve the appearance and hygiene of a tired-looking carpet. If it still looks poor after a professional clean, that's your answer.

How to Get More Life from Your Carpet

Is It Worth Repairing Rather Than Replacing?

For isolated damage โ€” a burn mark, a small area of fraying, a patch pulled up by a pet โ€” carpet repairs are often possible and cost-effective. A good fitter can patch in a section using offcut from a cupboard or under the stairs. But if the wear is general, patching won't solve the problem โ€” it'll just create a visible patchwork.
