Common questions from customers in Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill — answered straight.
Standard laminate is not suitable for wet rooms. In a kitchen it can cope with the occasional splash if mopped up quickly, but prolonged moisture causes boards to swell and lift at the joints. If you want the laminate look in a kitchen or bathroom, choose a water-resistant range — our Love AQUA and Love AQUA Steam are designed specifically for these areas, with Love AQUA Steam also being safe for steam mops.
For most homes 8mm is fine — it feels solid, installs easily and works well with the right underlay. 10–12mm boards give a more substantial feel and better acoustic performance, and are worth considering over hollow sub-floors or on upper floors. Our thickest option is the Furlong Elite XL at 12mm, which also carries an AC5 heavy-duty rating.
Yes, as long as all the tiles are firmly fixed and the surface is reasonably flat (no more than 3mm variation over 1.8m). Check for any loose or cracked tiles first — repair or remove them before laying. Also allow for the extra floor height at doorways and threshold strips. If the existing tiles have heavy grout lines, a floor-levelling compound will help.
Yes, always. Underlay cushions the floor, reduces noise (especially upstairs), provides a slight thermal barrier and irons out minor sub-floor imperfections. Some ranges come with underlay pre-attached — worth checking before you buy a separate roll. If you have underfloor heating, use a low-tog underlay rated for UFH use — the specific values are listed on each product page.
The AC rating measures abrasion resistance. AC3 suits general domestic use — living rooms and bedrooms. AC4 handles heavy domestic traffic including hallways, families with children, and pets. AC5 is tested for light commercial use and is ideal for very busy homes or rental properties. For most rooms AC3 is adequate; go AC4 or AC5 for hallways and high-traffic areas.
Properly fitted and maintained, a good laminate should last 15–25 years in a domestic home — most of our ranges carry warranties to match. The main enemies are standing water, grit underfoot (use entrance mats) and dragging furniture without felt pads. Keep it clean and dry and it will look good for a long time.
Laminate can feel hollow and echoey, particularly as a floating floor over a timber sub-floor. Good quality, dense underlay makes a significant difference. On solid concrete sub-floors the problem is much less noticeable. If you're laying above a room below, look for underlay with a good dB reduction rating, or consider a thicker board — our Furlong Elite XL (12mm) is very quiet underfoot.
