Saxony has long, upright fibres cut at the tips — luxuriously soft underfoot but shows footprints easily. Twist has tightly wound fibres that spring back to shape; it's more forgiving and better for busy areas. Loop pile (including berber) leaves the fibres in loops rather than cutting them — very durable and great for hallways. For bedrooms, saxony or twist. For stairs and busy hallways, twist or loop.
A good underlay is as important as the carpet itself — it affects comfort, warmth, noise reduction and how long the carpet lasts. For bedrooms, a 10mm thick, 130kg/m³ density underlay gives a lovely luxurious feel. For stairs and hallways, use a firmer 8mm, 160kg/m³ underlay that won't compress under heavy foot traffic. We can advise on the right underlay when you come into the showroom.
Stairs need a hard-wearing, tightly constructed pile — twist pile and loop pile are both good choices. Avoid very long saxony piles on stairs as they can feel slippery and show wear on the nosing quickly. Wool and wool-blend carpets hold up particularly well on stairs. Width matters too — most domestic stairs take a 4m roll as it minimises joins. Our Hereford Loop and Summit Twist are popular stair choices.
Measure the longest length and widest width of the room and add 100mm to each for cutting in. For L-shaped rooms, break them into rectangles. Stairs need to be measured as a separate run. Polypropylene (polyprop) is a man-made fibre that is very stain-resistant, colourfast and budget-friendly. It's not as naturally resilient as wool — it can flatten more over time in very high-traffic areas — but in a bedroom or living room it performs very well and is easy to clean. For hallways and stairs, a wool or wool-blend will usually last longer. Many of our most popular ranges like Banquet and Montego Bay are polyprop.
Choose a tightly looped or short-pile twist construction that doesn't snag on claws, and avoid long saxony piles that trap pet hair. Man-made fibres like polypropylene and solution-dyed nylon are more stain-resistant than wool — spills and accidents clean up more easily. A mid-tone, slightly flecked or textured design will also hide the inevitable dirt better than a pale, plain colour.
