Common questions from customers in Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill β answered straight.
Engineered wood has a genuine hardwood veneer on top (usually 3β4mm) bonded to multiple layers of cross-ply timber beneath. This gives you the real wood look, feel and grain of solid wood, but the plywood core is far more stable β it doesn't expand and contract as much with changes in temperature or humidity. Solid wood is generally thicker and can be sanded more times, but engineered wood is better suited to most modern homes, especially with underfloor heating.
Yes β engineered wood is much better suited to underfloor heating than solid wood, because the multi-ply core moves less. Keep the floor temperature below 27Β°C and bring the boards to room temperature for 48 hours before installation. All our Furlong ranges are UFH compatible. Boards above 180mm wide may need extra acclimatisation β check the specific product specification.
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit (the main cause of surface scratches). For cleaning, use a barely damp mop β never soak the floor or use steam. For oiled finishes, use a compatible wood floor cleaner or refresher oil occasionally. For lacquered finishes, a mild pH-neutral floor cleaner is all you need. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, and wax on lacquered floors.
Yes, but only a limited number of times β and only down to the thickness of the veneer. A 3mm veneer can typically be lightly sanded 2β3 times over the floor's life. The Furlong ranges we stock all have 3β4mm veneers, which is generous. Light surface scratches on an oiled floor can often be spot-repaired with a touch of oil rather than a full sand.
Yes. Leave the boards flat in the room they'll be fitted in for at least 48 hours before installation. This lets the wood adjust to the ambient temperature and humidity of the space, which reduces movement after fitting. Don't store them upright or in a garage β they need to be in the actual room at normal room temperature.
Choose a lacquered finish rather than oiled β lacquer creates a sealed surface that's more resistant to spills and easier to clean. Also look for a harder species or a denser oak grade; avoid very pale or white-washed boards in a busy kitchen as they show marks more easily. Our Furlong Emerald 148 in a mid-oak or stained finish is a popular kitchen choice.
