A spilled glass of red wine or a muddy dog doesn't have to mean a ruined carpet. The key with almost every stain is the same: act fast, don't rub, and use the right technique. Here's how to handle the most common culprits.
Whatever the stain, these principles apply every time:
The classic carpet nightmare. If it just happened: blot up as much liquid as possible with a clean white cloth, then sprinkle the area generously with salt or bicarbonate of soda. Leave for several minutes โ it will draw the moisture out. Vacuum up, then treat with a mix of one teaspoon of washing-up liquid and one teaspoon of white wine vinegar in 250ml of warm water. Blot, rinse with cold water, blot dry.
๐ก Tip: Soda water applied immediately can help dilute a wine spill before it sets. Pour gently, don't pour a waterfall.
Blot up the excess liquid first. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid with one tablespoon of white wine vinegar in two cups of cold water. Apply to the stain with a clean cloth, blotting repeatedly. Rinse with cold water and blot dry. For stubborn or older stains, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (3%) can help โ but test it first on a hidden area, as it can bleach some carpets.
The instinct is to clean it immediately, but resist. Let the mud dry completely first โ it will be much easier to remove. Once dry, break it up gently with your fingers and vacuum thoroughly. If a mark remains, use the washing-up liquid and cold water solution from above. Dried mud that's been trodden in is one of the more stubborn stains; a specialist carpet cleaner may be needed for heavily ingrained dirt.
Blot up as much liquid as possible. Apply a mixture of one part white wine vinegar to one part cold water and blot again. The vinegar neutralises the ammonia in urine and helps with odour. Rinse with cold water, blot dry, then apply a small amount of bicarbonate of soda once it's damp-dry. Leave overnight and vacuum in the morning. For the smell, enzymatic pet stain cleaners (widely available from pet shops) are the most effective long-term solution โ they break down the organic compounds rather than just masking them.
๐ก Tip: Steam cleaning over a pet urine stain before fully removing it can actually set the odour permanently. Always treat it first.
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda or cornflour onto the fresh stain and leave for 15โ20 minutes to absorb the grease. Vacuum, then apply a small amount of washing-up liquid directly to the stain and work it in gently with a damp cloth. Blot and rinse with cold water. Repeat if needed โ greasy stains often require a couple of treatments.
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is your friend here. Apply a small amount to a clean white cloth and blot โ never pour directly onto the carpet. Work from the outside edge inward. Ink can spread quickly if you're not careful. Rinse with cold water once the stain has lifted and blot dry.
Some stains โ particularly old ones, or those caused by tannins (like red wine that's dried in) โ won't fully respond to home treatment. A professional hot water extraction clean (often called steam cleaning) can work wonders on stains that seem permanent, and it's worth having done every 12โ18 months as general carpet maintenance anyway.
